Alright, so normally this blog is dedicated to useful information about online marketing strategies, social networking, and content development. But not today. Today, I must vent about certain social network users that drive me mental. You know who you are – you clog up my social media stream with useless information and annoying jabber. Well, I’ve had enough and I’m calling you out. Here are 10 of the most annoying people you’ll meet on social networking sites, Twitter especially.
10. The Self Promoter
“Visit wwww.mystuffisawesome.com today and see my awesome stuff.” News flash – your stuff is not awesome, stop tweeting about it. If I thought your stuff was awesome, I would be the one sharing it.
9. The Over Sharer
For all you people that post status updates announcing the death of a family member or the consistency of your latest bowl movement, stop please. Some things should be shared privately, and others shouldn’t be shared at all… ever.
8. The Exhibitionist
This type of person is like the loud cell phone talker of the social media generation. They seek attention by having very public conversations about very private matters. If you’re on Twitter, DM the person you’re talking to – don’t broadcast the results of your latest medical test for everyone else to read. Same goes for Facebook – don’t discuss your Sunday morning walk of shame on someone’s wall, the rest of the world doesn’t need to know about your exploits.
7. The Motivational Speaker
Oh, how I hate seeing my stream clogged with flowery quotes telling me to dance like no one is watching. Quoting the wisdom of someone else does not make you philosophical or smart. It simply makes me dislike you.
6. Spammy McSpam Bot
I don’t want to have whiter teeth, I don’t want more Twitter followers, and I don’t care if your supply of Viagra is 50% off. Go away. How these accounts manage to find followers and friends is stupefying.
5. Team Follow Back Ya’ll!
You don’t want to be a member of the follow-back team. Honestly, you’d be better off playing for the Detroit Lions than hanging out with these characters. These people are only friending you to inflate their follower number and feel self-important. Yawn.
4. The Cutsey Wutsey Networker
If you start your day off with a big “Good morning twittrific tweets and practical peeps” watch your back. Your sappy happiness makes me want to throw my computer out the window, preferably on your head.
3. The Stalker
I haven’t talked to you since third grade, yet you seem to make it your sole goal in life to comment on all of my Facebook photos. How did you even find me, my name has changed, and my profile is set to private…. creepy.
2. The Auto DMer
If I wanted to read your blog or become your friend on Facebook, I would have. Please don’t auto DM with a link to these sites. If I think they’re worthy of reading, I’ll read them naturally.
1. The Commitment Phobe
The first (and last) post from a person like this usually reads, “Twitter… is this like Facebook?” One study by RJ Metrics has shown that only 65% of Twitter users ever make it to the second tweet.
Phew, I feel much better now. But did I miss anyone? Leave a comment if you can think of any other shady characters that pop up on social networks.
Yesterday the web was all abuzz with leaked information about a new multi-paneled Twitter interface. And while I wouldn’t normally pay attention to online rumours, (if I did, I’d think half of Hollywood was dead), screenshots of the new platform have have been popping up all over the web, and an official announcement was made during a Twitter press conference late Tuesday. So just what has the little blue bird been up to lately? Here’s a quick run down of the proposed new features:
Twitter’s New Look
1. A Dual Web Interface
Users will start to see changes on Twitter.com within the next few weeks, the most notable of which will be a shiny new dual interface. This new view will allow users to see video, pictures, and other media alongside tweets. It’s believed that this design will make it easier for users to find related content, and navigate through overwhelming Twitter feeds. (If you’ve run the Twitter iPad app, you’ll have a decent feel for what the new Twitter.com will look like – screenshots show a similar layout, with some notable updates).
2. Integrated Media
Twitter announced new ways to embed media directly into the tweet stream, including the ability to embed and playback video content directly on Twitter.com. Users will no longer have to surf over to YouTube to catch a clip posted by a friend; instead, they can stay within the application and watch it all happen in one place. Sounds a bit like another popular social network… but we’ll get to that later.
3. Increased Speed and Response Time
Is it time to say goodbye to the fail whale forever? Twitter CEO Ev Williams tweeted yesterday after the press conference that the new Twitter interface will be “a faster, easier, and richer way to discover what’s new in your world” implying that the clunky old Twitter system has been completely overhauled and outfitted with a, shall we say, a Google Instant-like motor?
How Will Your Business Benefit from the New Twitter
While Facebook reigns supreme in the competitive world of social networks, Twitter’s latest updates could give it an extra boost in the popularity rankings. The ability to stream video and other media directly within the interface gives Twitter subscribers extra incentive to log in and communicate via Twitter.com. From the looks of things, the new web interface will include many of the features made popular by desktop clients like TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop. Twitter also announced more than 16 partners have contributed to the new interface, including media bigwigs like Justin.TV, Flickr, DeviantART, and Vimeo. Twitter may just become the place to “creep” the latest pictures of not just friends, but also celebrities, and more importantly, brands. If you’re a small business in Chatham-Kent looking to capitalize on the new Twitter updates, start charging your camera now! Pictures and videos will have even more opportunity to go viral on the new Twitter, so don’t forget to cross promote your latest event photos or video reviews directly through Twitter.com.
More changes are sure to leak out over the next few days as Twitter rolls out the updates across the web. Stay tuned to the CIK Marketing Facebook page for all the latest details.
What are your thoughts about the new Twitter? Are you excited for the multi-panel layout, or do you think it will be too distracting? Leave your comment and let us know.
